SWALLOWING TEST UPDATE:
Hi friends,
Thank you for your
prayers this afternoon. I had my 5th swallowing test today, and though I still
did not "pass", I have definitely made some progress since the last test. I
showed improvement in being able to get more of the pureed food down into my
esophagus, though at times, a decent bit would not fully go down and would
remain in my throat. Also, a few times, I aspirated small amounts of the food
into my lungs, which is not good.
I seem to be gaining strength in my
swallowing muscles overall, but I am still not initiating a complete swallow. We
will continue with the same therapies we have been doing for my swallowing, and
I will remain NPO ("nothing by mouth").
I continue to cling to the hope
that the Lord is in control. Being in a position of complete helplessness, where
there is nothing more that I can do for myself, is right where God wants me. It
is one of the most painful places to be in but also one of the most wonderfully
free. It must cause the Lord great pain to see his children hurting, but I know
that He also delights in the circumstances where his children have absolutely
nowhere else to go but to Him. It's all in His hands, and I am so thankful for
that.
Love and Blessings,
Katherine, Jay, and James

Quick note from jay wolf, her father-in-law:
For the last few days I joined Katherine and Jason in the deep, cold
and swift waters of their rehab world at Casa Colina. It is a high and
holy privilege to enter the sanctuary of their daily journey. They are
running an extraordinary race of faith and courage-navigating each new
challenge with patience, perseverance and pray. We treasure your
partnership in the creation of God's miracle and their superlative love
story.

Day 5 - MY SIGHT:
All my life, I have had 20/20 vision. After my rupture and surgery, my
right eye (like everything else on the right) was severely affected.
The right eye itself has trouble focusing and tracking in line with the
left eye. This creates double vision because both eyes are not exactly
working together. I can see out of my right eye, but it is very blurry.
The right eye also cannot fully look to the right and is still slightly
crossed into the middle. Another big problem is the damaged facial
nerves because those help me to blink. My right eye cannot fully shut,
and I do not blink it unconsciously throughout the day. This caused a
big problem in ICU because they were focusing on saving my life, not on
my eye, so it got completely dried out and my cornea was torn. They
thought I would need a corneal transplant, but another miracle was that
the corneal tear has almost fully healed. Still, my right eye does not
appropriately lubricate itself, so I have to get eye lube put in twice
a day, as well as get it patched up at night (otherwise my right eye
would just stay open and dry out while I sleep). Thankfully, it has
improved some since the beginning, but it is so hard not to be able to
see normally. In ICU, my eyes were both googly and could not control
any movements. Now, the left is completely normal. I just need the
right to come along! According to the neuro-opthamologist (I have a
follow-up appointment on December 4th), I will not have any permanent
vision loss, though I'm not sure if my eye will actually completely
return to normal or if my vision will once again be good. Thankfully,
it keeps improving and there are several surgical options to help it in
the future if need be. Please pray for more improvements and healing to
occur.
"We live by faith, not by sight." (2 Corinthians 5:7)
On a happy note, today (October 16th) was James' 1st birthday! We
had a great time celebrating with Jay, my mom, Sarah, and Big Jay.
James nearly ate an entire carrot cake cupcake! It's been quite a year,
to say the least, full of immeasurable blessings and challenges
(hopefully next year will be a little less eventful!), but the one
thing that always remains the same is the constant overflowing of the
Lord's grace and love onto our lives. I am so thankful to be here to
see my baby turn 1, and I pray to be around to celebrate many, many
more of his birthdays. Thank you God! I encourage you all to not waste
a moment loving the people around you, cherishing times of fellowship,
and appreciating all of the Lord's rich blessings in your lives.

Update on 10-14-08 by Katherine Wolf - My Swallowing:
Katherine walked over 70 yards by herself as two therapist functioned as mobile guardrails!!! It was answered prayer in motion! Keep asking, seeking, and knocking (Luke 11: 1-13)Sent from Jay Wolf (her father-in-law)
Hebrews 12:1-2
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 2 - MY SWALLOWING:
As many of you know, I cannot swallow at all. In the process of removing my rupturing AVM, the doctor had to partially cut the intracranial nerves which help to create the swallowing process. I do electrical stimulation therapy 5 days a week and specific swallowing exercises every day in hopes that the swallowing muscles and the corresponding nerves will be stimulated to regrow and remember how to perform their intended function. Eating or drinking when you have a weak or incomplete swallow ("dysphagia") is very risky because it greatly increases the chance of food or drink going down into the lungs and creating an "aspiration pneumonia" which could be fatal. I already had pneumonia once in ICU, and I really don't want it again!
As of now, and every day since April 21st, I have all my "meals" through a tube that hangs directly out of my stomach. I get a very high calorie, grey liquid poured directly into the tube 4 to 6 times a day, depending on how full it makes me feel. In almost 6 months, I have not had anything to drink or eat orally and have thus lost about 20 pounds. I have received very small amounts of ice chips and about 1/8 tsp of pureed food (yogurt, applesauce, babyfood, etc.) only during swallowing therapy and not even every time. It feels similar to claustrophobia in a weird way. Not being able to eat or drink anything has made me at times feel like a crazy person, stranded in the desert, deliriously wandering toward the next oasis. At this point, I just want some water! I would seriously eat or drink anything. It has almost gotten funny. Almost. Please pray that the nerves would regrow quickly and completely and that all of the components of the complicated process of swallowing would once again come together in my body.
Day 1 Prayer for WALKING Follow-up:
Thank you so much for all your prayers for my walking! God is so good and so are all of you for taking the time to intercede on my behalf. Prayer is so powerful, as evidenced by my session of physical therapy today. On this same day that so many lifted up my walking to the Lord, I walked the length of the breezeway (about 30 yards) with a therapist in front of me and one behind me spotting me very closely. It took quite a while, and they needed to steady me many times, but it was a first! I wanted you to know the Lord is hearing your prayers (I really think the Lord loves when His children ask for His help!), and He is faithful. So please keep them up! Thanks again.
Love,
Katherine, Jay, and James

Katherine wrote this encouraging message which reflects her gratitude, progress, current condition and prayer requests. We treasure your partnership and intercession as we follow King Jesus TOGETHER!

Heb. 12:1-2
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Message From Katherine:
I write this message to first thank you so much for your continued support and prayers. It has been life-sustaining for me and my family during this trying time in our lives. I am humbled by the fact that almost six months after my injury, there are still so many people who desire to walk this road with me. For that, I am eternally grateful. I have seen the beautiful power of prayer so vibrantly displayed in my life in these past months, so I now humbly ask all of you to pray for me, for one specific thing each day, for the next week.
For those of you who are really out of the loop, on April 21st of this year, I suffered a rupture of an AVM in my brain (this is very similar to a stroke). I was making dinner to take to 2 families with new babies when I collapsed in my apartment in Malibu. Thankfully, Jay was there to call an ambulance. I was taken to UCLA where a very risky and life-threatening surgery was performed on me for 16 hours, during which my full blood volume was replaced 5 times, my intracranial nerves 6 through 12 were damaged in varying degrees, and most of my right cerebellum was removed. They told Jay and my Mom I would likely not live through the surgery. I did live, and I hope to tell you all about all the miracles!
I was in ICU for 40 days, UCLA's Acute Neuro Rehab for 70 days, and for the past 60 days I have been in Pomona, CA at Casa Colina's Transitional Living Center. It has been almost exactly 6 months since this happened to me. I am doing pretty well, but each day continues to be a new mix of joys and sorrows, praises and frustrations.
Now, almost 6 months later, I am so thankful for all the Lord's blessings in my miraculous recovery, but I am still crawling my way out of the darkest valley of my life. I have many significant obstacles that I fight every day and will likely fight for a long while. Starting today, I am asking each of you to focus your prayer on one of the following issues per day, in this order. Day 1 - MY WALKING:
I still cannot walk by myself - at all - it's as simple as that. The cerebellum controls balance and coordination, which are essential for walking and movement. Since I no longer have most of my right cerebellum, my left cerebellum is having to completely relearn how to take over the right side's movements. This understandably takes a long time for your brain to rewire in this way. I have made progress in being able to somewhat walk while someone steadies me and holds me up, but it is very slow, and if I did not have major support, I would surely fall over ("ataxia"). I cannot even walk using a walker by myself. I have to have someone balancing me. There are so many aspects of walking to think about, which makes re-learning it very difficult. From actually having to think about how I am shifting my weight to the exact placements of my feet and slight bending of my right knee, it is one of the more difficult and frustrating challenges in my recovery.
Not only do I have a lack of coordination and balance, but I literally cannot feel where my body is in space ("proprioception") because most of my right side is numb due to damage of my intracranial nerves that send sensory signals to my brain. Thus, when I am falling or losing my balance, I cannot feel it and so I cannot correct myself. I'm sure you can imagine how maddening it is to fall over and not even know that you are falling.
Please pray for me to walk normally very soon and for my brain to rewire. At this point, because I cannot walk, I cannot do much for myself, which is very frustrating. I cannot go to the bathroom or pick up the remote that is just out of reach, and probably the most difficult, is that I cannot care for my baby. Knowing that I cannot pick him up if he is crying or go to his rescue if he needs me continually breaks my heart every day. Please pray that I will regain this vital ability sooner than later.
Love and Blessings,
Katherine
Psalms 30:1-5
I will exalt you, Lord, for you rescued me. You refused to let my enemies triumph over me.
O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you restored my health.
You brought me up from the grave, O Lord. You kept me from falling into the pit of death.
Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones! Praise his holy name.
For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime! Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning.
Update on 9-27-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law):
We cannot say it enough, but "THANK YOU" for all of your continued interest, support, and prayers for Katherine and all of us. We are overwhelmed by the sacrifices made on our behalf by all of you, from time in prayer, to financial support, to fasting, to physical presence, etc. We can say with confidence that we would not be able to continue this daily fight without you.We continue to humbly ask for your prayers because we know that our journey is far from over. As much as we selfishly wish we could fast forward this season in our lives, we know that with the Lord nothing is wasted. We pray that each day we can grow and learn from every situation that we face and that we might gain a deeper understanding of the nature of our Lord. It is a struggle not to fall into the doubts and fears that consistently whisper and often yell in our ears, but we feel that the promises of the Lord, given to us and so many people in our lives, still ring true. We stand in faith on those promises, though it's hard not to look down at the crashing waves below. We fight to fix our eyes on Jesus.
As a quick update for today, Katherine will have her 4th swallowing evaluation this afternoon at 2pm PST. This will be an MBS test (Modified Barium Swallow test) using a fluoroscopy machine (moving, video X-ray). Basically, they will administer very small amounts (1/8 teaspoon) of applesauce and other thin foods/thick liquids coated in barium (which makes it more visible on the fluoroscopy) and see how well she is able to swallow them.
At this point in her recovery, she is still having a lot of trouble completing a swallow. It is clear throughout the day that she cannot effectively manage the normal amount of secretions that we all are able to subconsciously swallow. Her saliva tends to build up in her throat and for whatever reason does not fully go down her esophagus (thankfully it does not seem to be going down her trachea into her lungs either, which would create a serious risk for aspiration pneumonia). This is very frustrating and disappointing for Katherine who has had almost nothing by mouth in over 5 months.
Please pray today that the Lord would bless us with some noticeable progress in her swallowing abilities since the last MBS test almost a month ago. Also, please pray for Katherine as she is continually faced with this seemingly insurmountable obstacle. Pray that her resolve to continue to fight will be strengthened, that her spirits will be lifted, that her constant hunger/thirst will be satiated, and that her hope will grow even through the most painfully slow progress.
God Bless and Thank You!
Jay III

Update on 9-26-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law):
Katherine and Jason can condense their primary prayer request to "swallowing and walking."Katherine's battle with the dragon of a neurological crash has stretched into 5 months. We praise God for her remarkable progress and passionately pray for more. She has navigated some of the most treacherous months and miles and there is still much to go. This is a hard stretch of the recovery road so prayer, patience and perseverance are required in massive doses.
Katherine's latest swallowing evaluation on 9/26 revealed some progress, but she still can not swallow. How we wish that a swallowing deficit was not a feature of Katherine's excruciating journey. The damaged nerves heal slowly so we must keep interceding and cheering for her.
Here are a few high points from the last days:
- Katherine went to a nearby mall and with the help of her physical therapist our champion stepped on and off an escalator!
- Katherine's right side is strengthening and she can stand by herself for a brief moment. This constitutes a great victory because two months ago she could barely sit on the side of the bed. She is working tenaciously in physical, occupational and speech therapy.
- On Sunday, September 21, Jason, Katherine, James and Sarah returned to Bel Air Presbyterian Church for the first time since April 20. After an elongated process, Jason wheeled Katherine into their Young Married Class of several hundred people. When the class leader saw Katherine and Jason, he began to weep and the place erupted with more cheers and tears along with a spontaneous ovation. Jason said the visit overflowed with the spiritual electricity of encouragement and became a living demonstration of the authentic compassion which should trademark Christ's Body.
- Katherine sent out one of her classic emails indicating that she is planning a fun party for James' first birthday. Her title for the gathering is "Life's a Zoo" because their current status is equivalent to wildlife management!
Let's continue to emulate the four friends we encounter in Mark 2: 1-10. Those believing brothers ripped up a roof in their passionate quest to place their hurting friend in the presence of Jesus. With consistent prayer we are placing Katherine at the feet of King Jesus and humbling asking for God's merciful and healing touch to raise her up in His time. In the meantime, know that we thank the Lord for your love, friendship, support and faith-filled intercession!
Update on 9-22-08 by Jason, Katherine's Husband:
Katherine is doing well at Casa Colina after a
little over a month. Though the situation has many great challenges there have
also been rewards, from the intensive, tiring therapy and her new "peer group"
of brain injured patients to her slow but sure progress across the
board.
She has made noticeable gains in her ability to balance and walk;
however, she still uses a wheelchair and requires assistance in all movements.
There has been slight progress in her swallowing, and she continues daily
electrical stimulation on her throat as well as face, to hopefully stimulate the
nerves in those areas to reactivate. She still can have NO foods or liquids
orally (except the occasional ice chip and only during swallowing therapy) which
has been an especially difficult aspect of this situation. Please continue to
pray for those issues as they are huge uphill battles for her.
Several PRAISES: the neuro opthalmologist thinks that
Katherine will have no permanent vision loss. Her right eye is still not in sync
with the left and it has much trouble seeing, but it has gotten much stronger
and hopefully will continue to improve over time. Also, since this past Monday,
Katherine has been spending the night at home for a 4 night trial period. She
goes to the same therapy during the day that she has been going to but has been
able to spend the night at home with us. This has be a much-needed emotional
relief after almost 5 months in a hospital bed.
There are some wonderful
Christian therapists here and some really sweet fellow patients, but there are
also some patients with significant emotional/cognitive issues that are really a
challenge for us to coexist with during this already very difficult time. We
know this is our (very strange!) mission field for the time being, but pray that
we would be able to clearly see all that the Lord has for us in this time and
place, and that He would give us the strength of body, mind, heart, and spirit
to do what we need to do every day.
We love you all and hope to see
you soon! Thank you for everything!
Update on 9-13-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Fathe-in-law) and Katherine herself!!! :
I had a deeply encouraging visit with Katherine, Jason, James and Sarah last week. Katherine is making some significant progress in most areas. Her secretions are down, her right side is strengthening and her walk with the King Jesus is rock-solid.We treasure your prayer support. Pray that she will be able to swallow and walk.
For me, the most exciting feature of her current progress is emailing! Following her day of intensive therapy, Jason brings her to their home adjacent to Casa Colina. She is now using a laptop computer to create some emails. She wrote:
Hey Family, Casa Colina is great. Baby James and I are hoping to come home soon. Today was a really full day. I had my swallowing evaluation, met with my doctor, and had a Chest X-RAY that revealed there was no pneumonia!
I wanted to let you know I failed another swallowing test. PLEASE PRAY for this. It seems that my body is once again not keeping up with my mind. I am so hungry.
I love you all and wish this never happened, but I know God is working it for good (Romans 8:28).
Love,
Katherine Hebrews 12:1-3
P.S. I typed this email myself! YAY!!!
We are traveling this road by faith and asking the Lord to be glorified every step of the way as He continues to raise up Katherine and raise up the Body of Christ.
"But the Lord is faithful and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. And may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the steadfastness of Christ." - 2 Thessalonians 3:3-5
Update on 9-04-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law):
Katherine started this
terrible voyage 135 days ago when a neurological storm nearly took her earthly
life. She and Jason are navigating the storm's aftermath with grace, courage and
faith. Your prayers and support are priceless. This is a tough, long and heavy
stretch of their recovery journey.
I made my 8th trip to LA this week and
I have been very encouraged by Katherine's progress. Her left side is doing
great. She can see much better with her left eye and that enables her to read
small amounts. Her left hand is strong and well coordinated so she can slowly
text message on her phone. She even composed her first email on 9/2/08!
Katherine sent a short note to family requesting continued intercession for her
swallowing because her latest evaluation revealed through the scanning process
that she continues to improve in the swallow mechanism but the liquid is pooling
around the esophagus and it is not actually traveling down the food tube to the
stomach. The inability to swallow is frustrating so we invite your continued
intercession for this important point of healing. Also, intercede for her right
side to keep recovering in all areas including strength, coordination, balance,
vision, hearing, vocal cord - and all of the shortcomings linked to the right
side cranial nerves needing restoration.
Another victory came through the
revelation of a chest X-ray that brought the good news that Katherine does not
have pneumonia and additionally a strange shadow in her lungs that has been
present since her time in ICU has disappeared!
On Monday Jason gently
helped Katherine get into their car and we took a driving excursion! Each step
of progress, each exercise and each prayer creates another piece of paving on
Katherine's road to recovery.
In summary, on Labor Day Katherine, Jason
and I talked for about six inspiring hours. I asked Katherine to identify her
main prayer request and she simply said, "Ask people to pray for me to
swallow and walk."
Jesus concluded the Sermon on the Mount with a
warning that storms will come to everyone. Hurricanes Gustav and Hannah
devastated the lives of many good and Godly people. So be prepared for the
coming storms by fully connecting to Christ and His Church. Jesus said in
Matthew 7:24 that if your soul is anchored to the rock of an eternal
relationship with Him, then you will have God's resource to stay stable amidst
wicked weather!
Update on 8-14-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law):
Yesterday, Katherine moved from
UCLA Medical center after 112 days on what felt like a gut-wrenching roller
coaster ride. We are most grateful for the excellent care that Katherine
received at UCLA. Their church family has been a living demonstration of
Christ's love. On Sunday afternoon, their Young Married class conducted a
service of praise and prayer in the hospital courtyard to celebrate God's
miraculous provision. On Tuesday morning at 10:30 AM, after a tearful and
well-photographed farewell, Katherine departed her acute rehab sanctuary and
traveled by ambulance east on Interstate 10 for 40 miles to Casa Colina
Rehabilitation Center in Pomona, California which is a "state of the art"
facility that is designed to help "God's Miracle Continue."
It
seems that Katherine's Restoration can be divided into 4 sections:
- ICU-40 days to save her life
- Acute Rehab-72 days to get her stabilized and started
- Transitional Living Rehab-Two to Four Months to get her strong
- Keep climbing-the ongoing efforts to attack her remaining deficits
Casa Colina will provide Katherine with 7 hours of therapy per day in an inpatient setting. They have all the tools to facilitate the hard work of her recovery. Jason and James have secured a three bedroom, furnished rental home owned by Casa Colina at the edge of their beautiful, 20 acre campus. Sarah and Mary Ruth will continue to care for Sweet Baby James.
The Wolf and Arnold families treasure your support and intercession. Keep Hebrews 4:16 activated, "Let us boldly approach the throne of our gracious God, where we may receive mercy and His grace to find timely help."

Update on 8-12-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law):
CATCHING UP ON
KATHERINE'S PROGRESS
Katherine has been at the UCLA hospital for 16 weeks. The 15 hour brain
surgery to remove her ruptured AVM at the brain stem and subsequent 40 days in
ICU saved her earthly life. For the last 70 days she has been in the acute
rehabilitation facility at UCLA to stabilize and start the process of regaining
the yardage the stroke ripped from her. To use football terms, it was as if
Katherine's catastrophic brain trauma drove her back 99 yards from her end zone
of health and strength to the edge of death. She stopped on the one inch line
and is now clawing her way back. In Acute Rehab, Katherine has fought many
battles from falling out of bed to vomiting a dozen times and aspirating a lot
of fluid into her lungs which created two rounds of pneumonia and required
another river of antibiotics. Excruciating pain in her right hip and tail bone
also created dark challenges. But in the last 3 weeks she has made significant
progress. The trach is out. She is in a regular wheelchair and is starting to
maneuver it. She has gained a lot more strength and the hip and tailbone
impediments have subsided. Her speech is progressing in a wonderful way.
Katherine is completely aware and cognitively tuned in to everything. Her will
and faith are strong. Her support system is immense.
Last Tuesday morning I watched with joy as she prepared for her 6 rehab
sessions by putting on her shoes by herself and she even forced her resisting
right hand to help tie her shoe laces! She can sit up on the side of the rehab
bench with excellent posture and did so for about 15 minutes without assistance.
Great progress is being made and we rejoice in it and thank God for
it.
BEARING DOWN IN PRAYER:
Thank you for continuing to water God's growing miracle with your prayers!
Please focus on the following needs:
- Katherine has the start of a swallow but ask God to give her the rest of it so she can eat!
- Healing of the right cranial nerves. The next 6 months is the time when the damaged areas of the brain tend to heal and retrain. Ask the Lord to suspend natural laws and recreate those lost functions on her right side-especially linked to her right eye, ear, vocal cord, facial muscles, soft palate, swallowing mechanism, and motor strength and coordination for walking.
- Katherine is slated to go to a fabulous rehabilitation facility in Pomona, California call Casa Colina on August 12. God uniquely guided the process to get her at a place that looks to me like the "Disney World of Rehabs!" Their slogan is "Where God's Miracle Continues." Pray for the transition to Casa Colina to go smoothly and that the seven hours of rehab per day will help Katherine regain a massive amount of her lost yardage.
LOOKING UP TO THE LORD IN FAITH
God's sustaining supply is real
and abundant. Your support is priceless. So let's keep looking to King Jesus in
humble faith and praying from Romans 8, "Lord, keep bring your glorifying
good from these terrible times. O God, if you are for us then who can be against
us. Father, You did not spare your own Son but gave Him up for us all, so we are
confident that You will supply our needs out of your riches in Glory in Christ
Jesus. Furthermore, we are assured that nothing can separate us from Your
unending and unbreakable love!"
Update on 8-11-08 by Jason Wolf (Katherine's Husband)
A note from Jason...
Hello Friends of Katherine,
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers
yesterday, the procedure went well. Katherine had collagen injected into her
throat to plump up her right vocal cord which is not working properly (this will
effectively help close off her airway when she swallows and prevent anything
from getting down into her lungs). The doctors also determined that the right
side of Katherine's soft palate and right side of her tongue, lips, mouth, face,
etc. are not functioning (due to the necessary cutting of her 7th intercranial
nerve during her surgery). This is not new news; however, the lack of function
in those areas will continue to affect her ability to talk until they hopefully
(and miraculously) return. She will likely be fitted with a retainer-like device
that will help to lift the right side of her soft palate to help her speak
better.
She did not fully pass the swallowing test, though there is the
beginning of a swallow (the laryngeal part, which is first, as well as back of
the tongue movement, just not the pharyngeal part, which completes the swallow
down into the esophagus); therefore, she will remain on the G-tube until she
regains that function. We will return back to the ENT doctor in 3 months to try
the test again. Again, this was not completely unexpected (directly after her
surgery, Dr. Gonzalez noted that there would likely be issues with her
swallowing; now we understand it was because the 9th and 10th intercranial
nerves were partially cut during the surgery), but it was very difficult to
officially hear this news from a doctor, especially because Katherine really
thought she was able to effectively swallow (and was hoping to eat, drink, etc.
very soon, which now will not be the case). The speech therapists will now
specifically focus their efforts on retraining and strengthening the swallowing
muscles in hopes that she can regain some or all of that function in the near
future. It remains to be seen how these recent developments will influence our
next steps after UCLA's Acute Rehab (we should know more after the team
conference this Wednesday).
The ENT doctor did say that up to 3 months
after a brain injury like this the intercranial nerves that were damaged will
have retracted but in these next 6 months (between the 3rd and 9th month after
surgery) those nerves will start the slow process of regrowing and hopefully
regaining the lost functions. Needless to say fully cut nerves are more
difficult and near impossible to regenerate (ie. her 6th and 7th intercranial
nerves, right auditory nerve--which controls hearing and balance--and right
facial nerves) but we'll see what the Lord will do! Even partially cut nerves
(i.e. 9th and 10th intercranial nerves, essentially swallowing) may not be able
to fully regenerate or perform the same function, but the next 6 months should
be a time of continuing, miraculous improvements.
Dr. Gonzalez came by
yesterday and saw Katherine up and doing physical therapy. They even had a
conversation. He reiterated that her progress is beyond all belief. He honestly
did not expect her to ever wake up after the surgery, so to see her moving
around, sitting up, and talking brings tears to his eyes. He says that in the
coming months, he anticipates her progress to be so great that she will seem
like a different person from where she is now. We are so thankful for his
perspectives and thoughts on Katherine's recovery. It always helps us to
remember how far the Lord has allowed Katherine to come.
104 days after
Katherine's surgery, we still remain so hopeful and grateful, though this
situation is not without it's great burdens, emotionally, mentally, physically,
etc. The Lord has done so much for Katherine, yet it seems like every day we
(particularly Katherine) face really horrible things that push us to the limits
of our faith and trust in the Lord and his plan for us, but we hang on to the
Lord's promises and try to move forward. Prayers for our next step after UCLA's
Acute Rehab would be much appreciated. I feel great pressure to decide where we
need to go next, whether home (to the new Westwood apartment) or to another
facility, whether in the LA area or back South. There are lots of options and
lots of different (and often conflicting) opinions on what would be best for
Katherine, so we need the Lord's wisdom and clarity of direction to see where we
need to be next.

Update on 8-5-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law):
On August 1 Katherine had a
"swallowing evaluation." The results revealed that she has the "start of a
swallow" but the rest of the complicated swallowing mechanism is not
operating. The Physician was encouraging and explained that cranial nerve damage
repairs very slowly. He projected that Katherine's cranial nerves will start to
repair at a faster rate over the next 3 to 6 months which could usher in
dramatic improvements for her swallowing and other right side deficits. But
currently she can not swallow and Katherine felt extremely disappointed in the
results because she longs for the normalcy of eating and
drinking
Katherine is making progress on many fronts and we praise God
for her growing abilities. She still has a mighty long way to go and we need you
to pray for the following specific needs:
- That God would repair her damaged cranial nerves so her right side deficits would experience restoration.
- Wisdom for knowing what should be next in Katherine's Rehabilitation Journey. Our season with the wonderful friends at UCLA is nearing an end. We are exploring several options and as Jason put it, "we want Katherine at the place that will give her the best opportunity for God to help her recover."
- Pray especially for the regenerating of her SWALLOWING.
Update on 7-24-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
We know that Katherine's ultimate
destination is restoration!
Between here and the summit of recovery our task is to pray in faith with
humble dependence on King Jesus, offer support and provide massive doses of
encouragement as she fights the bitter
battle.
Highlights
- Our medical friends conducted a special meeting with the Wolf and Arnold families and emphasized that Katherine has made incredible progress in light of the far-reaching nature of her brain stem stroke and surgery. Her communication, movement, growing strength, and positive attitude were part of the long checklist of positives. They expressed a deep affection for Katherine and belief in her continued progress.
- Katherine's trach has been capped and she is tolerating it well. If her blood oxygen levels stay up, the trach may be removed this week which could possibly help her swallowing and vocalizing.
- I talked with Katherine on Jason's cell phone at her request as they were strolling outside in the UCLA courtyard area. Although her voice sounds muted, I was able to understand everything she said. Katherine asked when I was coming back. She expressed her appreciation for all of the prayer support and ended with her trademark, "I love you so much."
- The Medical team said that some of Katherine's problems will be "stubborn." My Mary Ruth called the hard parts, "in the miracle realm." Our Father will need to re-create and re-train in some areas. So pray for Katherine's brain to keep healing around the cranial nerves and brain stem.
- Intercede for her trach to be removed and for her SWALLOWING to re-start.
- Her tailbone and right hip hurt and merit your specific prayers.
- Pray for her right whole right side with special emphasis on her right eye, vocal cords and the hearing in her right ear.
- We will need extra wisdom for knowing how to handle the complex insurance issues and for the next step for Katherine's Rehab after UCLA.
A Closing Thought
Thank you for traveling with us into this tough
territory of physical and spiritual warfare. The Lord invites us to learn and
lean as we activate the powerful truths of Hebrews 10: 19-23, "We have
confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus. We have a great priest
over the house of God. Let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance
of faith. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for
He who promised is faithful."

Update on 7-18-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
IMPROVEMENTS TO
CELEBRATE
Katherine is talking a lot. She even used her cell phone to
call Jason by herself! She is progressing on the walker with the assistance of
two helpers. She has transitioned to a standard wheelchair which means she is
gaining more control over her torso. Katherine shared a profound observation
with her therapist, "I have problems on the outside, but I am normal on the
inside!"
INTERCESSION NEEDS
- Removal of the trach, reduced secretions and some issues with her lungs and the blood oxygen levels
- SWALLOWING RESTORED
- Right eye and right side to keep healing and the tailbone pain to diminish
- Wisdom for what to do next when acute rehab ends at UCLA in a few weeks. There is not a roadmap for this journey so suggestions are welcome!
A BEAUTIFUL BONUS
Katherine talked on the phone to Sam
Simmons, my fabulous father-in-law in Florence, Miss. who wrote this inspiring
note to our family yesterday and it applies to our larger prayer
team.
Dear Family,
Tonight Mom and I were prayerfully discussing
Jason, Katherine and James and the journey they are on...and of course, we are
all on that journey with them. In all my days, my prayer life has never been so
vibrant and alive. On impulse, I called Jason's cell phone, expecting his
answering machine, just to tell him how much we love him, Katherine and James,
and how proud we are of him. Jason is now my hero...he is a champion. He has
shouldered a huge load and stood in the breach during perilous times.
To our
surprise, Jason answered, and said he was in Katherine's room talking with her.
Very soon he said, "Peeps, would you like to talk to Katherine?" I said yes, and
to my amazement, we had a beautiful conversation. We were able to understand
each other. Mom heard my excitement...came running in and she visited with
Katherine on the phone. I cannot describe the elation and excitement and
thanksgiving that we felt. It truly was a gift from God.
This was a reminder
to us that we are not to grow weary in the well-doing of fervent, effective
prayer for Katherine, Jason and James, as well as all the Wolf and Arnold
families. Thanks to each of you!
I Love you,
Dad
Update on 7-17-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
Katherine's marathon to recovery emulates
much of life. It is a journey that vacillates between triumph and trouble.
Consequently, the advice of Jesus, in John 16:33, proves to be invaluable:
"In this world, you will have tribulation. But, be of good cheer for I
have overcome the world!"
Triumphs
Last week on two
occasions, Katherine was able to stabilize herself on a special walker in the
Rehab Unit. And with a great amount of assistance from two guardians, she did a
little walking. Her right side is much weaker and her right foot lacks
coordination. However, we are celebrating the fact that her blood pressure
remained up and she was able to slowly travel about seventy feet on Saturday.
Katherine had the passé mere valve in for nearly an hour on Monday and
her vocalizing is improving.
We treasure your prayers for her continued
supernatural healing.
Troubles
The speech/swallow therapist
indicated that Katherine has a long way to go to regain her swallowing reflex.
Katherine dreams of drinking water and eating again. So pray that God would help
her swallow and accelerate the process of restoring that important ability. Also
pray for the pain in her right hip to diminish. Intercede for the damaged areas
to re-create, re-grow, and be restored. Plus, as Katherine's awareness regarding
the length and difficulty of her recovery grows pray that her faith, will and
spirit will remain sturdy and strong.
My heart resonates with the
Psalmist when he declares, "I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living."
(Psalm 27:13) Keep standing with us and refuse the toxins of doubt and
discouragement. In faith, stay locked on to God's promise of supplying His
peace, power and provision.

Update on 6-27-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
This is day 67 of Katherine's
Doctoral level course on "Pain, Suffering and Trusting God's Redeeming
Activity." Katherine and Jason are making straight "A's" on their tests! God
bless you for traveling with us through the problems, progress and praise
points.
Problems
Katherine vomited twice a couple of days ago
which could have caused her to choke or aspirate the vomit into her lungs since
she cannot swallow. Jason was with her and helped clear her airways so a
potential disaster was averted. Both times she went to x-ray to be certain there
were no obstructions in her lungs. The medical team had changed her feeding tube
procedure and this may have been the culprit. Pray for Katherine's respiratory
secretions to decrease, her trach to come out and no more vomiting.
Progress
Katherine grows stronger each day. However, her
therapist had stopped trying to stand her upright because her blood pressure
would drop and she would grow dizzy. They felt the brain stem was malfunctioning
in this critical area. But yesterday the therapy team brought in a new piece of
equipment which resembles a hydraulic chair. Katherine was hoisted up and stood
for 10 minutes without growing dizzy! Keep praying for God to supernaturally
re-create, re-train, re-coordinate and re-strengthen Katherine's parts and
functions that are damaged.
Praise
Katherine has had nothing in
her mouth for 67 days due to the risk of choking. She has a terrible case of
"thrush" in her mouth which creates additional discomfort. Her speech therapist
feels the right side of her face is improving and she is going to give Katherine
some ice chips. Katherine often signals for water and has had dreams of getting
a drink so this will be another milestone!
Jason told me that Katherine's communication and connection with him keeps
growing stronger. On Thursday (6/26) she conveyed to him the question, "What
has happened to me?" He told her about the stroke, surgery, ICU, and the
tidal wave of prayer and support. She seemed to drink in the details with an
increasing depth of understanding coupled with a resolve to climb her mountain
of recovery.
God is growing our miracle! Keep standing in the gap by interceding. Let's
activate in faith 2 Chronicles 32:7-8, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be
afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him,
for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the
arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us to fight our
battles."
Update on 6-25-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
Treasured Friends, Your Prayers are Making the Difference so keep adding
intercessory fuel to the engine of Katherine's Recovery!
I called Jason
last night and he immediately said, "Dad, I am sitting by Katherine and listen
to this!" He placed the phone by Katherine's face and with wonderful,
breath-taking clarity she said to me, "Hi-i-i-i-i!"
YES! Thank YOU, Father--You are doing a powerful work and allowing us to be
a spectator and participator.
After I shared some profuse affirmation with Katherine, Jason explained
that she is learning to vocalize more and with greater clarity, even with the
trach in place. Additionally, he amplified the fact that Katherine moved herself
in her wheelchair about 50 yards which took 20 minutes of hard work--but she did
it and even utilized her right hand!
Their fabulously faithful small group from church came for their weekly
Bible Study and they met in Katherine's room last night to encourage and pray
for them.
Let's pray specifically for her secretions to go down;
her healing and progress to soar up; her trach to come out; our faith to grow
deep; and King Jesus to be lifted high!
"Let us come
boldly before the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to
help in our time of need." Hebrews 4:16

Update on 6-22-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
We started climbing this monstrous mountain two months ago. Katherine achieved some good progress in rehab this week. We are boldly asking King Jesus to conquer the problems and accelerate her recovery! Her fall last Saturday interrupted rehab for a few days but she is moving forward. Aim your prayers at:
- Reduced secretions so she can get the trach out.
- Heavenly help with her right hip which hurts and hampers rehab due to calcification.
- Re-creation and re-training for the right cranial nerves and strengthening of her right side.
- Getting Jason, James, Sarah and Mary Ruth moved into an apartment near UCLA on Monday, June 23.
- Sustaining strength and wisdom for the journey.
* Superimpose Luke 13:12 over Katherine and pray that Jesus would proclaim
again, "Katherine, you are set free from your infirmity."

Update as of 6-18-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
Here is another burst of bright
light against the dark canvass of Katherine's fight with a vicious brain stem
stroke. On day 56 of Katherine's battle, we heard a breakthrough. Jason related
that the speech therapist covered her trach opening and encouraged Katherine to
push some air up into her mouth and suddenly she VOCALIZED THE WORD "HI"!!!
Jason was thrilled. Brooks, her dad in Athens, Georgia, happened to call Jason
about that time and Jason placed the phone to Katherine's mouth and she said,
"Hi" to her Father which electrified his heart. It was another step of progress
that will lead to greater steps of progress-so we magnify the Lord for His
gracious guidance, strengthening and provision.
Keep praying for her
progress to increase and for the problems to decrease!
We feel much
admiration for and indebtedness to Katherine and Jason's church family at Bel
Air. They constitute a living demonstration of Christ's love. They have brought
scores of meals, helped care for sweet baby James, spent hours as sentinels
watching dear Katherine, provided housing, and shared countless hugs, tears, and
prayers. They are ardent followers of King Jesus who have been welded yet closer
together by the intense heat of Katherine's battle.
As you intercede for
Katherine and the legions of hurting people in our fallen, dangerous world, from
those suffering floods in Iowa to earthquakes in China-tune into God's promise
in Isaiah 43, "Fear not, for I have redeemed you. I have summoned you by
name. You are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When
you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep you away. When you walk through
the fire, you will not be burned. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy one of
Israel, your Savior."
Update as of 6-16-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
I returned from my fifth trip to
LA on Friday evening. The overwhelming burden of this experience has been
greatly softened by your consistent prayer support and gracious expressions of
love.
Katherine is making a lot of progress. She is growing stronger
with a great deal of movement on the left side. Her tongue is moving more and
she is almost licking her lips. She has a lot of cognitive recognition in all
areas. She is using the ABC spelling board to convey some messages. She is
forming more words with her mouth, although she is unable to fully open her
mouth or speak. Her eyes are better. Her neck is stronger with more movement.
The therapy is working and increasing her strength.
Prayer Needs:
On Saturday (6/14) Katherine fell from her hospital bed which could have
been a devastating set back. After many anxious moments and a battery of test it
appears that no real harm was done. We praise God for what DID NOT happen!
Katherine is sore from the fall so pray that her rehab will not be impeded.
Also, join us in asking the Lord ( Matthew 18:19-20) for accelerated healing on
the right side, the removal of the trach, and increased swallowing so she can at
least have some ice chips to moisten her mouth. Intercede for our dear daughter,
Sarah Wolf, who has resigned her missions assignment in Ethiopia to come to LA
and take care of her nephew, sweet baby James.
On Sunday my courageous
and faith-filled son and his baby son experienced their first Father's Day.
Sarah helped baby James make his dad "breakfast in bed!" Father's Day and the
rest of their circumstances are far different than preferred, but the redeeming
hand of God is at work. We have purposed to embrace this hard race and
constantly lean on God's mercy and grace.
Jesus, the guiding and
providing Good Shepherd, invites us to LISTEN because, "My sheep listen to my
voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they shall
never perish; no one can snatch them out of My hand." - John 10:27-28
Update as of 6-12-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
Yesterday was the 50th day of
our journey. For 40 days, Katherine was in the wilderness of the ICU. Now she is
bound for the promised land of recovery but, like the Children of Israel in the
book of Joshua, she must cross the flooding Jordan River and fight the battle of
Jericho!
Katherine was placed in a shower chair and experienced her first
shower on June 10! When I arrived at room 100 in UCLA's Acute Rehab, Kim had the
blow dryer going and was combing out Katherine's hair. Katherine looked
wonderful to me. She was in workout clothes. Her mouth is now open more and her
neck moves more freely. Her eyes are improving. The excellent therapists are
guiding her to work hard and get all of her functions to re-operate. The work is
exhausting, painful and frustrating for her. They placed Katherine on an special
board that mechanically inclined her to a standing position to help her get
re-accustomed to the sensation of being upright.
The prayer focus is a
call to intercede for her right side. She has a long way to go but she is moving
forward. Keep asking God to re-knit the right cranial nerves so her swallowing,
tongue movement and the ride side functions can be restored. Pray for
Katherine's strength and our for us to be wise.
Jason visited again with
the CEO of the UCLA Medical System and he made the remarkable comment that he is
keeping up with Katherine on the web site and he felt our family's collaboration
with the medical team, the support of the Young Married Sunday School Class and
the use of the internet for prayer support has created something of a new
paradigm for UCLA.
Thank you. We love you. And Keep PRAYING! "Greater is
He who is in you, than he who is in the world." 1 John 4:4
Update as of 6-6-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
We thank God for a major breakthrough! Yesterday afternoon, Katherine was placed in the Acute Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at UCLA Medical Center!!! This is a wonderful development because UCLA has a top-rated rehab program and it would keep us linked to Katherine's surgeon, Dr. Gonzalez, and the entire medical team, whom we have grown to love and appreciate. Some significant Medical Insurance problems have been resolved which simultaneously aligned with the availability of the rehab bed so we are starting the next phase of Katherine recovery. Pray for Katherine's cranial nerves to keep awakening and the strengthening of her right side. She is cognitively connected and has signaled to Jason that she understands rehab will be a daunting and painful climb. Jason has been a magnificent cheerleader, caregiver and spiritual anchor in our storm. Pray that Katherine, Jason and the family will stay in the Philippians 4:13 gear of "utilizing Christ's all-sufficient strength." The Lord is guiding and providing and we are rejoicing in taking the first small steps on to the rehab road. Thank you. We love you. Keep praying.
Update as of 6-2-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
We are thanking our gracious
Heavenly Father for Katherine's progress. On Saturday, her 40th day at UCLA's
ICU, the ventilator was removed!!! They conducted a ceremony of celebration and
Jason took a picture of the breathing machine as it was rolled out of the
room!
On Sunday afternoon, Katherine was moved to a regular room on
Seventh Floor West, adjacent to the ICU. She is slowly moving forward. Katherine
is fighting hard but she is as weak as a baby kitten. Keep praying for
restoration of those cranial nerves that control the right side of her face so
she can open her mouth, move her tongue, and swallow. Continue to intercede for
the right side to strengthen. Lift up Jason and our families as we enter this
new phase of Katherine's recovery process. We need God's wisdom and
perseverance.
Thank you. We love you. Keep trusting God with us to grow
our miracle! "He who began a good work in you, will be FAITHFUL to complete
it." Philippians 1:6

Update as of 5-31-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
By Jay Wolf (Katherine's father-in-law)
Praise the Lord! We have
wonderful news. Katherine's breathing is improving so rapidly that the medical
team suggested that she can leave ICU by SATURDAY!!! She is breathing on her own
with a little bit of oxygen. Otherwise, she is very near to getting off of the
ventilator.
Thank you to our prayer team. And praise God for this
wonderful step forward!
Update as of 5-30-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
We praise God for
Katherine's progress!
All of her key indicators are in the positive
range. She breathed on her own twice for several hours with only oxygen coming
into her tracheotomy. Katherine sat up for 3 hours in the special rehab chair. A
physical therapist came and did some exercises with her and Jason extended the
session by helping his precious wife move and exert her arms and legs. She is
moving her neck with more strength. Her left hand can pick up small pieces of
paper and does a lot of signaling. When Katherine was sitting in the rehab
chair, Jason was hugging her and her left hand was stroking his head and playing
with his hair!
PRAYER OPPORTUNITIES:
- Pray against fever and infection that would impair her progress.
- Ask God to help her breathing mechanisms to strengthen so she can get off of the ventilator soon. She has been on the ventilator for 38 days.
- Keep interceding for the right side of her face to keep thawing out so that her mouth, tongue, and cheek would experience a restoration of their functions.
Update as of 5-27-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
The Wolfgang headed west and gathered in LA. We encountered good news
about Katherine's progress. Her fever has retreated! All vital signs
are in the positive zone. She was very alert in the morning. Her friend
Lauren Miller was playing Katherine's ipod and it came to her favorite
song, "In Christ Alone." As the soul-raising hymn played, Katherine
took her wooden cross and held it high with her left hand in
affirmation of the music's message that King Jesus is the risen and
redeeming Savior!
I encountered Katherine's surgeon, Dr. Nestor Gonzalez, as I carried
sweet Baby James on a tour of the hospital art. We had a delightful
visit. Dr. Gonzalez affirmed that Katherine is doing fantastic. He
called her, "a woman of multiple miracles." He said that one of the
most difficult parts of her surgery was linked to cranial nerve 7 which
controls the right section of her face. He said that Katherine is on
track and her breathing is improving. The key is to be patient and and
keep praying.
Katherine looks good. Her hair is growing back in the places it was
shaved. Today, when the nurse was placing some medicine in her right
eye, our friend exclaimed that Katherine's eye looked much better and
it was centered! So keep praying for the right side and for her to get
off the ventilator--progress is being made!
Remember to exchange your anxiety for God's peace by activating Philippians 4:6-7, "Have
no anxiety about anything, but in everything, with prayer and
thanksgiving, make your request known to God and the peace of God which
surpasses all understanding will keep your heart and mind in Christ
Jesus."

Update 5-21-08 Afternoon
Gigantic Praise!!!! Jay said that the tests have revealed that Katherine's natural drainage system is working!!! The 4-inch ventrix probe has been removed and she will not need a shunt. Praise the Lord!!! Jay was very excited telling how Sarah had called him because Katherine wanted to hear his voice. The Lord is doing a mighty work. Keep praying!
Update 5-21-08 Morning by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
lease focus like a laser on Katherine's brain drain. Last night she had
a brain scan to see if her natural system for draining cerebral fluid
has reopened after being damaged by her brain bleed on April 21. Many
indicators are encouraging her medical team that this rare reversal is
taking place and her draining mechanism is starting to function again.
The result would be the removal of the ventrix which is a drainage
device that has been inserted in her brain for 30 days. Additionally,
she would not need the surgery to implant a permanent brain shunt which
may eliminate future complications. This would be an extremely positive
burst of God's light and an affirmation of our concert of prayer.
All other indicators are in the positive territory.
Katherine can not speak right now but YOU CAN! So use your voice to praise God and tell someone about the love of King Jesus!
"I will TELL what God has done for my soul." Psalm 66:16
Thank you. We love you. Keep praying!

Update as of 5-20-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
This is the 28th day of Katherine's captivity. We are standing
resolutely on God's unbreakable love and remain fully assured that our
kind Father is guiding Katherine to restoration and release. James 1
explains, "Consider
it joy, my brothers, when you face trials, because you know the testing
of your faith develops perseverance and perseverance produces maturity
and completeness."
We praise God for:
- the miracle of God saving her life and giving us the privilege to pray her back to complete restoration. There are strong indicators that some of her natural brain drain is working. On Sunday, she opened her mouth a bit more and there was a slight movement of her tongue.
- Katherine is cognitively connected and responsive. On Sunday, she was extremely alert and with her left hand played the game of Paper, Rock and Scissors with Jason. She won several rounds!
- On Friday, Jason graduated from Pepperdine's Law School. When he received his diploma, his classmates gave him a standing ovation. It was an electrifying moment. He is passing this daunting test with top marks.
- the brain drain issues would be resolved
- Katherine would soon be off the ventilator
- her right eye would continue to heal and make progress
- her cough, swallowing, tongue and neck movement mechanisms would unthaw. We keenly anticipate the day when she will speak and we will hear her sweet voice again.
- the pathway to rehabilitation would be clear
Thank you. We love you. Keep praying.

Update as of 5-16-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
Katherine is on a wavy road that is leading to restoration. She had a
good day yesterday. Her breathing is progressing which is the vital
prerequisite for getting off of the ventilator. Her own brain drain
seems to be starting to work!!! Therefore, they are still delaying the
surgical placement of a permanent brain shunt. Her right eye has been
glued shut to promote healing and that is helping and her doctor is
thrilled at the progress. Keep praying specifically for Katherine's
breathing, swallowing, brain drain, eyes and for her brain stem
functions to continue to regenerate!
More good news: Our friends at Pepperdine Law School are allowing Jason
to graduate, so Law school is completed! His full focus is on
facilitating Katherine's recovery.
We are deeply indebted to all of the prayer warriors. We are doing
James 5--applying the "oil" which represents securing the best medical
help and then praying like our hair is on fire! As you intercede, you
are actively participating in God growing our faith-building miracle.

Update as of 5-14-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
God continues to grow our Miracle through Katherine!
Yesterday the staples were removed from her head. Jason described it as
"a backwards 7." Her breathing keeps strengthening. She spent more time
in the special rehab chair in order to challenge and strengthen her
neck muscles which are tied to her swallow, gag, and tongue
performance. Keep praying that these primary functions will increase
and even take a leap forward. The focus of today is her brain draining
the cerebral fluid. Lastly, here is a sweet picture. Katherine signaled
for her Mom to get in bed with her. Katherine then motioned for Jason
to get on the other side. He said there was not enough room so he
placed his head on Katherine's shoulder. Katherine then pulled her
Mom's arm over to cover Jason's shoulder. It is a snapshot of how God
designed us for each other and for a love relationship with Himself. (1
John 4:7-8) Thank you. We love you. Keep praying!

Update as of 5-12-08 by Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
Katherine made some progress in her breathing department but the
medical team has shifted the focus to the Ventrix which is an apparatus
that goes down into her brain to measure intercranial pressure and to
drain out cerebral fluid. The Neurologist hoped to build up some
pressure and try to open up the valve in her head that naturally drains
out the fluids. They need to get the Ventrix out of her head to prevent
possible infection. As the fluid built up on Thursday, her natural
drainage system did not activate and Katherine was less responsive. Her
physicians are considering putting in a brain "shunt" in the next few
days to drain the fluids and this would require some surgery...
Beloved Prayer Team, in FAITH join me by envisioning Katherine ARISING
as God grows His miracle. In your sanctified imagination place that
picture of Katherine completely restored as the backdrop. Then keep
praying that her current circumstance of suffering and struggle will
soon be transformed into new strength and full recovery.
"Have no anxiety about anything but in everything, by prayer and
thanksgiving, make your request known to God and the peace of God that
surpasses all understanding will keep your heart and mind in Christ
Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7

Update as of 5-7-08....By Jay Wolf (Katherine's Father-in-law)
It has been16 days since our precious Katherine suffered a catastrophic brain injury. It has been the worst and the best of times. We have experienced excruciating suffering mixed with the exhilarating experience of God showing up and showing off! God's call is to FAITHFULLY walk with Him and keep "asking, seeking and knocking" (Luke 11:9-10). We are asking for the Lord to continue to suspend natural laws and orchestrate a supernatural healing of our Katherine for His glory and our good. Katherine's nurse, Annie, told us this morning that the ICU team refers to Katherine as "Our MIRACLE girl!"
